NETmundial concludes in Brazil

The NETmundial conference on the future of Internet governance and cooperation concluded last week with the publication of the NETmundial Multistakeholder Statement.

Key points from the statement include:

• New recognition provided to critical aspects of Internet governance, including the "multistakeholder" approach; open and participatory consensus-based decision-making; and open standards
• Recognition that the Internet should continue to be a globally coherent, interconnected, stable, unfragmented, scalable, and accessible network-of-networks, based on a common set of unique identifiers and that allows data packets and information to flow freely end-to-end regardless of content
• Recognition of the IGF as the preeminent location for Internet governance-related discussions in future
• Focus on the IANA oversight transition to be completed by September 2015

The conference was attended by 1,480 people from around the world, drawn from governments, business, civil society, academia, and the technical community. APNIC participated and you can read the event wrap report on APNIC News.

Four out of five RIRs at 'last /8' of IPv4

ARIN's recent announcement, coupled with the Latin American registry, LACNIC, reaching its final pool of IPv4 addresses in March, means that four of the five RIRs globally have now reached their final '/8' block of addresses.

APNIC reiterates its call for organizations to progress their plans to move to IPv6 as a critical priority.

APNIC, the RIR for the Asia Pacific, was the first to reach its final /8 in April 2011 and was closely followed by RIPE NCC, the RIR for Europe, in September 2012.

APNIC at the Global IPv6 Summit

APNIC participated in the Annual Global IPv6 Summit, which was held in Beijing from 17 - 18 April. APNIC's Deputy Director General, Sanjaya, presented in the session entitled, "Global IPv6 Development & Internet Management", urging Asia Pacific organizations to continue down the IPv6 path.

APNIC's Services Director, George Kuo, gave an update on IPv6 deployment in the Asia Pacific region, noting that with the increasing number of mobile devices accessing the Internet, shifting to an IPv6 network infrastructure is an important decision carriers should consider for future growth.

OECD publishes new paper by Geoff Huston

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) Committee for Information, Computer and Communications Policy has published a new paper by APNIC Chief Scientist, Geoff Huston, examining the current impact of global IPv4 exhaustion and the state of IPv6 deployment.

Following on from an earlier 2007 OECD report, which evaluated IPv4 exhaustion, the "Internet in Transition" paper details the risks inherent in the extensive use of different types of "IPv4 address extension" middleware, and the potential bearing this technology has on the wider Internet economy. The paper also provides commentary on the economic impact of the shift to IPv6, noting the future economic success of the Internet relies on this transition.

Event wrap: WTDC 2014

The 2014 World Telecommunication Development Conference was held in Dubai from 30 March to 10 April. This event was a key opportunity to meet with government representatives from the Asia Pacific to discuss IPv6 training and development in their economies. WTDC also provided APNIC with the chance to participate in the conference discussions around Internet development, which feed into the ITU's strategic plan for 2016 to 2019.
